Blacksmith WORKSHOP, BOTUȘ, Suceava 20th century
Nicolae Ciumău’s smithy from the village of Botuș, transferred to the museum in 2004, comes from an area rich in copper ore that began to be intensively exploited once the land was falling under Austrian rule. This is a simple construction with a river stone base, walls made of fir beams arranged horizontally and a two-slope roof covered with shingles.
The blacksmith workshop has specific furniture made by its owner and a diversified inventory of tools: anvil fixed on a massive oak wood support, tool table with vise, whetstone sharpening wheel, horse leather bellows, pliers, hammers, drills and chisels with various shapes and uses, etc.
The local terminology of some ironwork objects (“holştoc”, “şpiţamăr”, “bomfaier”, “haucling” etc.) reveals the Austrian heritage of practicing the craft in this area.
