FEMININITY AND ADORNMENT - IA ROMANIAN
Worn with pride both by simple peasants from the Romanian village and by the queens and princesses of Romania, it is an element of popular wear that treasures values specific to each ethnographic area, emphasizes female creativity.
The popular women's costume consisting of a shirt or tie, fota, borangic scarf or richly decorated scarf, beautified with ornaments characteristic of the age, sober when it was worn at work but precious and elegant when it was worn on holidays or on the occasion of important ceremonies in people's lives, each geographical area has special characteristics.
The central piece of the costume, ia, also entered universal art through the work of the great French painter Henri Matisse, entitledThe Romanian blouse, the artist being inspired by the beauty of the Romanian countryside.
The queens and princesses of Romania were attracted by the Romanian folk costume which they adopted and wore with pride on special occasions, promoting it as an emblem of Romanian identity.
The popular female costume is also found in religious art from Romania, in iconographic representations from churches and icons. An example in this sense is the Holy Great Martyr Filofteia from the Curtea de Argeş Monastery, the protector of women, young people, and children, who is dressed in the folk costume.
