"At the gates of the sun. From Sânziene to the Village Museum"

Thursday, June 24, 2021 The National Museum of the "Dimitrie Gusti" Village invites you to the cultural event"At the gates of the sun. From Sânziene to the Village Museum". As every year, the Village Museum brings back the traditions and customs of this day: from weaving the wreath of Sânziene flowers, to throwing it on the house, from wearing a shirt, to deciphering the symbols sewn on it and participating in the Sânziene fair .

In popular belief, the Sânzienele were considered to be beautiful women, nocturnal divinities who float in the air or walk on the earth on the night of June 23 to 24, sing and dance, make fields fruitful, multiply animals and birds, heal people's diseases and sufferings . At night when the heavens open, the girls gather Sânziene flowers and put them under their pillow to dream of their bear.

On the morning of Sânziene, before sunrise, people gathered bouquets of Sânziene, which they braided into wreaths and threw them on the roofs of the houses. It is believed that the person will live long if the wreath stays on the house or, on the contrary, that he will die quickly when the wreath slides to the edge of the roof or falls from the roof. The Sânzienel festival marks the middle of summer and is considered the best time for gathering medicinal plants. In Sânziene, parties and events take place. In the past, they were a good opportunity for young people to meet for marriage.

The holiday of June 24 is also popularly known as Drăgaica. Even now, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Birth of Saint John the Baptist. And last but not least, June 24th is celebrated: it is the International Day of Ia since 2013, at the initiative of the online community "La Blouse Roumaine".

During the event, young and old visitors will learn about the properties of medicinal plants with Mr. Ing. Petre Biolan (with participation based on registration - at the e-mail addressrelatii.publice@muzeul-satului.ro) and will witness the reconstitution of old customs - which people practiced on Sânziene day - by the Vatra Harmanului Ensemble from Brașov.
