Day of the Cross. Cârstovul Viilor.
The National Museum of the "Dimitrie Gusti" Village invites you on September 16 and 17 to the event entitledDay of the Cross. Cârstovul Viilor. An important holiday for the village world, the Day of the Cross means the end of the agrarian summer, marked by the picking of the vines and the "beating of the nuts".
Like all moments of passage, the Day of the Cross gives the plant world special healing powers, being the last day on which medicinal plants are harvested; in the animal world, the lions, it is said that they hide underground from where they will come out only at the Alexias of the following spring; the snake that has bitten a man over the year is no longer sheltered by the earth, which is why the holiday is also popularly known as Snake Day.
For the Orthodox Church, the Day of the Cross is celebrated in memory of the two important events related to the Holy Cross, namely the Finding of the Cross on which the Savior had been crucified and the Bringing of the Holy Cross to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. On this day the faithful fast to remember the Lord's passion and death, and tradition says that no black food or bearing the sign of the cross, such as nuts, garlic, cabbage, etc., should be eaten now.
On this day of celebration, the Village Museum welcomes you with selected products of traditional gastronomy and various creations of folk craftsmen.
The traditions of the moment of picking the vines will be brought to the visitors, as every year, by the beloved members of the Țara Vrancei Folk Ensemble who come from the historic land of wine with song, play and good cheer.
You are therefore expected to haggle, party and enjoy Romanian traditions in the courtyard of the National Museum of the "Dimitrie Gusti" Village.
